Artists Statement

I am based in the beautiful Ribble Valley in the remote hamlet of Cow Ark (reknowned for people getting snowed in). I create my pottery whenever children, large garden and energetic dog permit. This often finds me working long and unsociable hours to cram enough making time in!  In my previous life I used to run a construction company with my brother based in Rochdale.

Starting at evening classes four years ago, I have rapidly developed my love of clay and now have my own studio based at Cow Ark.

I work in stoneware or raku clay to create animal sculptures. I am inspired by the vast array of nature and farm life in the beautiful Forest of Bowland. I aim to capture the essence or character of the animal I am making, but also resort to skeletal and muscular drawings to try and get the basics right. The pieces are either highly textural and finished with natural oxides and some body stains, or they are burnished and subjected to a firey raku or smoke reduction process to give a natural, beautiful and often unpredicatable finish!  I am currently preparing for an exhibition at the Platform Gallery, Clitheroe - "One Year On" and also our own event "Art in the Garden" here at Spring Bank House. I will also be at the Cheshire County Show this year, demonstrating and exhibiting work for sale.

I am a member of Northern Potters and also the Art and Craft Guild of Lancashire.

I have had so much help and advice from friends and neighbours, thank you all!  Please browse and contact me if you are interested in any of the pieces which are all available for sale, wish to visit or maybe even request a special gift to be made for someone.

Thank you
